Brief description: Design for a 2 light war memorial stained glass window
Proposed design for the war memorial windows, each depicting St Michael and Christ with angels and soldiers in each light. The windows are set against a quarry background. On the left, St. Michael holds a sword and torch above an airman, sailor, and soldier. Below, an air raid warden, member of the Home Guard, and a farm labourer stand around a banner. On the right, Christ rides on a white horse to rescue a man in chains. This is a reference to the Book of Revelation (Revelation 19:11-13). This image of Christ's eventual return and freeing of the world places the events of World War Two into an eternal narrative of justice and victory. Below are members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, Women's Land Army, Women's Royal Naval Service, and Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Hundreds of thousands of women served in these organisations to carry out essential war work and free up men for the front line. Angels hold banners at the top of both lights. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
