Brief description: Design for a 5 light stained glass window depicting the annunciation
Proposed stained glass design for the north chapel window depicting the Annunciation against a quarry background. The Annunciation is a traditional scene in which the Archangel Gabriel tells the Virgin Mary she is pregnant with Jesus. Here, Gabriel is dressed in golden robe embroidered with white floral patterns, and stretches his wings over Mary. Mary is dressed in her iconic white and blue, and kneels meekly on a cushion. A lily in a pot, a traditional symbol of Mary's purity, sits beside her. Tumbling from Gabriel's wing on the right-hand side is a scroll bearing Mary's response to Gabriel, acting almost as a speech bubble. A banner, bearing a quote from the Magnificat (Gabriel's speech to Mary), weaves through the upper tracery. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
