Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting 6 saints
Proposed design for a windows on the north side depicting various saints. In the left light, St Patrick and St Wilfred, St Columba and King Oswald in the centre light, and St Aidan and St Hilda in the right hand light. Together, they form a group of early British and Irish saints. St. Patrick was a Roman missionary and serves as the patron saint of Ireland. St. Wilfred and St. Columba were important early churchmen. King Oswald was an Anglo-Saxon king who promoted the spread of Christianity in Northumbria. He is pictured here with the wooden cross assembled to inspire his troops at the Battle of Heavenfield (633). St. Aidan worked closely with Oswald to promote Christianity and founded the monastery at Lindisfarne, whilst St. Hilda was abbess of the prominent abbey at Whitby. The window is set against a quarry background. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
