Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting the Ascension
Proposed design for the window on the east window of the south chapel depicting a risen Christ in the centre light, an angel in the left light and the Maries in the right hand light. Window is set against a quarry background. This window compresses the story of Jesus' resurrection. The two Maries look on in shock at the angel sitting by Christ's empty tomb, here built into the ground. The angel points at the risen Christ, dressed only in his burial shroud and carrying a pennant, representing his victory over death. The pennant is of the English flag, lending this window a patriotic tone typical of the postwar period. The central light represents a past event– Jesus is not there when the Maries come to the tomb in the original story– hence why the Maries seem to stare right through him. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
