Brief description: Design for a single light stained glass window depicting St Nicholas
Proposed design for the window on the north side depicting St Nicholas, who surrounded by children. St. Nicholas (270-343) is now most famous for being the inspiration for Santa Claus, but has several legends associated with his generosity and sense of justice. This window is a reference to a legend in which a butcher killed and salted three children, planning to sell their remains as pork during a famine. St. Nicholas is shown here resurrecting the children and plucking them from the barrel. This story was extremely popular in the Medieval period, including on stained glass windows, and the depiction here may be based on an older window. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
