Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting St Francis
Proposed stained glass design for the south side of chapel of St Elizabeth (easternmost window) depicting St Francis in the centre light with animals. In the left and right lights, cherubs hold banners, and all are set against a quarry background. St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was an Italian monk noted for his piety and for founding the Franciscan Order. Here, he is dressed in a Franciscan habit and surrounded by birds in a tree, perhaps a reference to his famous habit of preaching to birds. The stigmata (crucifixion-like wounds) on his hands and feet are a reference to a miracle in which they appeared on him during his life. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
