Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting an angel with pastoral scenes in the left and right lights
Proposed stained glass design for the eastern most window of the south aisle, features an angel surrounded by scenes of children playing. This rather twee window seems to be an homage to an idealised British childhood. The central angel holds a basket of flowers, as lambs and cows prance in a field behind them. In the left light are scenes of a child learning to walk, lambs, a girl riding a pony, and children swimming. On the right are scenes of seagulls against the white cliffs of Dover, a boy with a toy boat, a child riding a bike, and two boys playing cricket. The sun blazing down from top of central light completes the idyllic mood. An extract from the Benedicite, a common canticle (song), and some clouds fill the tracery. Somebody, perhaps the client, has amended the design with a blue biro, giving an insight into the design process. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
