Brief description: Design for a single light stained glass window depicting St George
Proposed stained glass design depicting St George on a horse. He is surrounded by heraldic shields, floral motifs and scrolls against a quarry background. St. George (d. 303) was a Roman soldier who was executed for his faith, with the legend of the dragon becoming associated with him in the Medieval period. St. George's pedigree as a military saint may be why King Edward III chose him as patron saint of England in 1350. Here, he is depicted as a Roman soldier, clutching a cross-topped spear and banner with the English flag, a St. George cross, as his horse tramples a green scaly dragon. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
