Brief description: Design for a single light stained glass window depicting the Ascension
Proposed stained glass design for the East window of the Commonwealth chapel depicting the Ascension. This design differs from ELYGM:2024.13.22 only in minor details and positioning. The central image of Christ and a smaller crucifixion scene are set against a quarry background with angels and scrolls. At the centre, Christ, naked aside from a white loincloth, ascends to heaven with light beaming around him, one hand raised in a gesture of blessing. The stigmata, wounds from his crucifixion, are visible on his hands and feet. A crown waits for him at the top of the window. Below, St. John and the Virgin Mary watch as Christ is crucified. The angels on either side hold a crown of thorns and a spear, the instruments with which Christ was tortured during his crucifixion. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
