Brief description: Design for a 2 light stained glass window depicting the annunciation
Proposed design for the East window of the south chapel depicting the Annunciation. The archangel Gabriel kneels before the Virgin Mary, raising a hand in blessing. He is dressed in a beautifully embroidered robe and has beautiful multicoloured wings. Mary receives his blessing with a hand over her heart, and light beams down upon her from a dove above St. Gabriel, representing the Holy Spirit. The group are surrounded by a floral border. There are heraldic shields in the tracery and the window has a quarry background. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
