Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting Christ in the carpenter's shop
Proposed design for the east window of the south aisle depicting a young Christ in the carpenters shop. St. Joseph saws the plank Jesus is holding on the left, whilst the Virgin Mary carries a water jar on the right. A flock of sheep is visible through the door behind them. The flock of sheep and the hammer and nails visible on the table behind Jesus are all symbolic references to his future life. Through a trick of perspective, Jesus is depicted as about the same height as his parents. The window is set against a quarry background and there are angels in the two central traceries. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
