Brief description: Design for a single light stained glass window depicting St Michael
A quarry window with a scene depicting St Michael with the dragon within a swag with banner and space for an inscription. St. Michael and the dragon is based on a scene from Revelation (12:7) and can be distinguished from St. George by St. Michael's wings. Here, Webb has leant into that iconographical confusion by putting a St. George cross on St. Michael's shield, giving the window a patriotic tone common in the postwar period. St. Michael wears golden armour and swings his sword high, as a rather brontosaurus-like dragon hisses. An alternative design for this commission can be found at ELYGM:2024.14.126, offering an insight into the design process. This window is a memorial window to Leonard Frederick Foster 1887-1946. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
