Brief description: Design for a 3 light stained glass window depicting scenes the Virgin Mary and child, saints and famous women
Proposed design for the window in the north side depicting the Virgin Mary and child in the centre light. This window celebrates the Virgin Mary's patronage of women. In the centre of the lights on either side are female saints, including St. Elizabeth with the young John the Baptist, St. Anne, St. Catherine with a sword, and St. Cecilia with a pipe organ. Below are inspirational modern women. On the left are Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an influential nurse and medical reformer during the Crimean wars; Edith Cavell (1865-1915), whose dedication to treating the wounded and helping Allied soldiers out of Belgium led to her execution by the German forces during World War One; and Mary Sumner (1828-1921), founder of the Mother's Union. On the right is Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), an influential prison reformer, with two imprisoned women. The windows are set against a quarry background. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
