Brief description: Design for a 2 light stained glass window depicting St Godfrey and St Aldhelm
Proposed stained glass design for the window in the Ambulatory of the North Chapel. This WW1 memorial window, depicting St Godfrey and St Aldhelm is dedicated to two local soldiers. St Godfrey of Bouillon (c. 1060-1100) was a Norman aristocrat who helped take the city of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. St. Godfrey was then appointed ruler of Jerusalem. St. Aldhelm (c. 639-709) was an influential religious leader, scholar, and writer in Anglo-Saxon England. The image of the crusading soldier is appropriate for a memorial window, particularly one for a soldier who died near Jerusalem. This design was created by Christopher Webb (1886–1966), an English stained glass designer based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. He studied at the Slade School of Art and was then articled to Sir Ninian Comper. During his active career from 1920 to 1964 he produced over 400 windows with a distinctive character and style.
