FIVE VICTORIAN STUDIOS
Brief description: Design sketch for stained glass roundel showing 5 Victorian stained glass studios. Designed by Michael Coles for an exhibition in 1987.
The design depicts the studios of five famous Victorian stained glass studios. They are from clockwise; 1. James Powell and Sons, Whitefriars premises, off Fleet Street, 2. Lavers, Barraud and Westlake, Endell Street, Covent Garden, 3. Morris and co, on the right Wandle at Merton Abbey, Colliers Wood, 4. Heaton, Butler and Bayne, 14 Garrick Street, Covent Garden, 5. (in centre) Clayton and Bell, 311 Regent Street, Westminster. The Gothic Revival of the 19th century generated an enormous increase in demand for stained glass. The craft employed hundreds of people, working in large, almost industrial, premises. In this panel, made to commemorate a major exhibition at the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1987, Michael Coles depicts the premises of five of London's largest studios of the Victorian and Edwardian era. Michael Coles trained at the Royal College Art. In this panel he illustrates his love for acid-etching of flashed glasses. He is also a painter and icon-maker.
