ST CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA
Brief description: Stained glass panel depicting St Catherine of Alexandria by J.E. Nuttgens, c.1980
This stained glass panel depicts St. Catherine of Alexandria, dressed in red and white, and holding a book and sword. The wheels in the background are breaking wheels, a torture device used to systematically break the bones of the victim, before leaving them tied to it to die of exposure or be set on fire. St. Catherine was supposed to be tortured on the wheel, but it shattered at her touch, hence the fragmentary state of these wheels. Nuttgens (1892-1982), a prolific stained glass artist, created this panel for his granddaughter Katherine, one of his 44 grandchildren.
