MARY, QUEEN OF HEAVEN
Brief description: Coloured design for stained glass window showing Mary Queen of Heaven by J. E. Nuttgens.
Colour design for stained glass window showing the Virgin Mary in radiating glory, with three angels on either side, all dressed in deep blue. The blue and yellow colour palette creates a calm and unified composition. The window was designed for the Lady Chapel of St Joseph's Church, Nechells, Birmingham. Joseph Edward Nuttgens (1892-1982) was a prolific stained glass artist in his own right, and also created designs and assembled pieces for a variety of artists, including Herbet Hendrie and the firm James Powell & Sons. Nuttgens was Head of Stained Glass at the Royal College of Art, but as a half-German was asked to resign after the First World War. This did not impact the success of Nuttgens' subsequent career, and he went on to have thirteen children.
