HEAD OF KING DAVID
Brief description: King David cartoon by Francis Spear for the south transept wall of St. George's Cathedral, Cape Town, South Africa
An ink and wash cartoon by Francis Spear for the face of King David depicted in the south transept wall, below the rose window, of St. George's Cathedral, Cape Town, South Africa. Three lancets were conceived as part of the overall design for the south wall of the transept showing the Risen Christ in the centre in the rose window, with his ancestor King David below. On either side are the witnesses of the resurrection in the upper sections: on the left St. Peter with keys and St. John with cup, and on the right St Mary Magdalene with a jar of spices. In the lower parts of these three lights are the prophesises of the resurrection with those that uttered them: Hosea, David and Isiah. These figures have vine foliage backgrounds. At some point the image has been cropped from a larger cartoon.
