CARTOON OF ST LUKE
Brief description: St. Luke cartoon by Francis Spear for east window of St. Mungo's Cathedral, Glasgow, depicting the four evangelists with royal heraldry.
An ink and wash cartoon by Francis Spear for the face of St. Luke for the four evangelists' (with royal heraldry underneath) east window. The Great East Window was dedicated in September 1951 by Rev Dr Nevile Davidson, the minister. It was paid for by Lord Bilsland, Sir Robert Sinclair, Charles Spencer and Anne Rintoul Spencer. Spear recalled an episode concerning the Secretary of the Friends who remarked at the dedication service that 'when the sun shone on the windows, St Luke winked; I told him I did not charge extra for miracles but I would gladly paint another eye if he climbed the 50 feet or so to replace it.' The winking eye was caused by the dark colour accentuating the light. At some point the image has been cropped from a larger cartoon.
