EVE
Brief description: Stained glass panel depicting Eve by Francis Spear, 1957
Eve, the first woman believed to have been created by God, is the subject of this panel. The artist, Francis Spear (1902-1979), likely made it as a trial panel for his commission for the west window of Glasgow Cathedral representing ‘The Creation’. The Corporation of Glasgow, who had agreed to fund the new window in 1951, invited Spear and a handful of other artists to submit designs for the window in 1953. Spear was formally selected as the artist in 1954 but the committee did not agree his designs until April 1956, and a number of changes were made before the final window was dedicated in 1958. During his career, Spear produced more than 300 stained glass windows in over 130 public locations, including six cathedrals. He benefitted from the increased work in Britain following the Second World War.
