PRESSED GLASS GLASS

Brief description: Pressed slab glass with blue swirl pattern. Produced by Whitefriars and used by Leonard Walker.

Slab glass is created by blowing glass into a box-shaped mould. This produces a cube where the walls are thicker in the centre and thinner towards the edges. The cube is then split, producing five flat sheets of glass (the four sides and the bottom). The varying thickness of the resulting glass 'slabs' creates refractions and colour shifts in the glass, causing it to 'hold' light and produce a glowing effect sought after in various types of stained glass art.
