KING DAVID
Brief description: A design of King David holding a serpent in the shape of a harp and a sword. Designed by James Tennant Lyon.
This image of King David was likely drawn by James Tennant Lyon (1836-1872) as a design for stained glass. It may have been separated from a larger design, or used as a cut-out. David is shown holding a harp with the head of a serpent and with a sword suspended from a baldric (a belt worn over the shoulder). It is one of several drawings by the artist acquired by the museum in an album. Lyon had a brief involvement with stained glass in a short-lived partnership with William De Morgan (1839-1917) but little is known about this period.
