MORNING
Brief description: A cartoon for a stained glass panel by Ervin Bossanyi called Morning. It shows two figures reaching towards a red orb, probably the sun.
This preparatory design, known as a 'cartoon' is a 1:1 scale drawing for a panel on the theme of ‘Morning’. It depicts an old man and a boy reaching towards the rising sun. The colour palette is warm, with lots of yellow, orange and red. The cartoon is for a stained glass window for the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule in Utersen, Germany. Two completed stained glass panels of these subjects, which were perhaps sample panels for the commission, are now in the museum's collection. When the Nazis rose to power in Germany, Bossanyi emigrated to England taking these designs and panels with him as an example of his work. Bossanyi is perhaps best known for his work in stained glass, with windows in Canterbury and Washington Cathedrals, the New West End Synagogue and the Tate Gallery in London. He was also a versatile designer who worked in many media - sculpture, metalwork, ceramics - as well as being a prolific painter.
