ST PAUL PREACHING AT ATHENS
Brief description: Stained glass panel depicting St Paul preaching at Athens. Attributed to a student of William Collins between 1820-1830.
St Paul Preaching at Athens takes its subject from Acts 17:16-34 which is an account of the Apostle Paul delivering a sermon in Athens at the Areopagus. St Paul is shown with his arms raised, preaching to a crowd in the city square of Athens in front of the temple of Mars, with a statue of Mars in front of it. The composition for this panel has been copied from RaphaelÂ’s tapestry cartoons (1515) now in the V&A Museum. The V&A also possesses a stained-glass panel of this subject signed by William Collins (1788-1847). A fine example of enamel painting on thin sheet glass, it is hardly distinguishable from a painting on canvas. The glass is between one and two millimetres thick.
