WOMAN GATHERING SHEAVES OF CORN

Brief description: Stained glass panel depicting a woman gathering sheaves of corn. Designed and made by Francis Spear pre war, between 1930-1939.

Francis Spear (1902-79) produced this experimental panel with his students at the LCC Central School of Arts and Crafts during the 1930s. The image shows the top half of a female figure, her arms outsrteched gathering sheaves of corn. Her head is turned to her left and face is in full profile. It is one of several panels Spear made at the time using similar techniques. The unpainted panel has been created by the outlines of the lead and the different textures of the machine-rolled, reeded and fluted glass.
