THE APPLETON MEMORIAL WINDOW, FEED MY LAMBS

Brief description: A stained glass window of three lights depicting Jesus with Simon Peter, women and children. Designed and made by Margaret Chilton in 1912.

This window shows Christ instructing St. Peter. On the left, St. Peter wears a turban and a white tunic with white and yellow drapery. He is nimbed, barefoot, and holds a fishing net in his hand. The net extends across all three panels, filled with fish, and represents St. Peter's original career as a fisherman and his new career as a 'fisher of men'. In the centre, Jesus stands regarding Peter. He is nimbed with a multicoloured halo, and wears a grey tunic and iridescent robe. He holds a shepherd's staff in his right hand, and his left gestures to the group behind him. On the right, a group of women and children sit. A small child in blue kneels and prays, with a child in yellow watching behind them, hand draped over a woman's knee. Behind them, a woman dressed in pale blue sits, holding a baby, and a woman in grey coos as she stands behind her. The inscription 'Feed my lambs' is a quote from John 21:15, where Jesus instructs Peter to care for the Christian community. This window was a memorial to two sisters Jane and Louisa Appleton and originally placed in St JohnÂ’s Church in Clifton, Bristol. It was designed and made by Margaret Chilton (1875-1963) in 1912. Chilton was born in Clifton, Bristol and trained at the Royal College of Art where she studied stained glass under Christopher Whall (1849-1924), whose influence can be seen in the lead work and decorative motifs used in this window.
