FIVE VICTORIAN STUDIOS
Brief description: Stained glass roundel featuring five famous Victorian stained glass studios. Designed and made by Michael Coles for an exhibition in 1987.
The Gothic Revival of the 19th century generated an enormous increase in demand for stained glass. In the Victorian and Edwardian period the craft employed hundreds of people, working in large, almost industrial, premises. This panel illustrates the premises of five of London's largest studios of the Victorian and Edwardian era. It was made to commemorate a major exhibition of Victorian Stained Glass at the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1987, by artist Michael Coles (1940-2018). Coles trained at the Royal College Art and worked as a painter and icon-maker. Clockwise, the studios shown are; 1. James Powell and Sons, Whitefriars premises, off Fleet Street, 2. Lavers, Barraud and Westlake, Endell Street, Covent Garden, 3. Morris and co, on the right Wandle at Merton Abbey, Colliers Wood, 4. Heaton, Butler and Bayne, 14 Garrick Street, Covent Garden, 5. (in centre) Clayton and Bell, 311 Regent Street, Westminster.
