THE VISITATION
Brief description: Stained glass roundel depicting the visitation. Made by Margaret E. Aldrich Rope in about 1930.
Stained glass roundel depicting the visitation. Made by Margaret E. Aldrich Rope in about 1930. Roundel shows Mary and Elizabeth greeting each other with an embrace. Mary is kneeling with her back to the viewer. Elizabeth has her hands on Mary's shoulders. They are in open country in front of house of Zacharias, the husband of Elizabeth. Four swifts or swallows fly behind the figures. Both women are nimbed. Elizabeth wears a simple cloak with yellow stain, and Mary has a darker cloak with a hood. A popular subject for stained glass, this portrayal depends simply on paint enlivened with silver stain, similar to some medieval roundels. From 1911 Margaret E. Rope also worked with her cousin Margaret Agnes Rope at the Fulham Glass House. After 1945 she had her own studio assisted by her friend and pupil Claire Dawson.
