Two lancets, depicting Queen Victoria and Edward VII. During Queen Victoria's long reign, 1837-1901, stained glass enjoyed unprecedented popularity and creativity and underwent a technical and artistic transformation. Hugh Arnold attended the Slade School of Art in the 1890s and subsequently the Central School of Art. Here he became the pupil of Christopher Whall, from whom he absorbed the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. The author of an influential study of medieval glass, Stained Glass of the Middle Ages in England and France (1913) Arnold was killed in action at Gallipoli in 1915
