FOUR APOSTLES

Brief description: Parts of a four light stained glass window and tracery which depicted Saints Peter, James, Andrew and John. The window was made by Lavers and Barraud to the designs of Henry Stacy Marks in the 1860s. The tracery lights appear ot have been designed by either Westlake or J M Allen.

Four light stained glass window and tracery depicting Saints Peter, James, Andrew and John. Made by Lavers and Barraud and designed by Henry Stacy Marks for the main light and either Westlake or J M Allen for tracery. Made in the 1860's. In one panel St Peter holds the fish that represent both his original occupation and Christ's instruction to him to become a 'fisher of men'. At the bottom of the window the glass has deteriorated to such an extent that it has lost its transparency. This condition, commonly called 'green glass disease', occurs periodically in the 19th century, a result of an imbalance of chemicals in the glass. Henry Stacy Marks was a well known painter and decorative artist.
