A rectangular stained glass panel on the theme of Morning, depicting an old man and a boy reaching towards the rising sun. They wear yellow and cream coloured garments. Below the sun are large flowers with grass and leaves along the base. In the bottom right-hand corner of the panel is a trail of ants carrying the letters which form the artist's name 'BOSSANYI' into a hole. The date '1932' is picked out in dots representing grains of soil. This is one of two panels by the artist on the theme of Morning and Evening in the museum's collection. This panel was made in 1933 and is a replica, with some details changed, of a window made for the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule in Utersen, Germany. Born in Southern Hungary, the young Ervin Bossanyi (1891-1975) studied in Budapest, Perugia, Rome, Paris and London in the years before the First World War. In 1919 he settled in Lübeck, Germany, where he made his first stained glass. He relocated to Hamburg in 1929 and made glass for a number of important buildings designed by the city architect Fritz Schumacher. Anticipating the persecution of the Nazi regime that claimed the lives of some of his family, he emigrated to England in 1934. Among the last works made by the artist before he left Germany was this panel and its companion, 'Evening', along with a depiction of the 19th-century building replaced by Schumacher's new high school in Vetersen.
