This stained glass roundel depicts the allegorical figure of Commerce as a female with billowing garments. Made in 1923 by Leonard Walker (1877-1964), it is a replica of the centre of a large window made for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in Singapore. Secular settings and commercial buildings provided an increasing amount of stained glass artistsÂ’ output from the late 19th century onwards. This roundel relies on the streaky colours of the glass and the lead outlines for its design, using only the smallest amount of glass paint is used for the face and hands. Leonard Walker used glass in different thicknesses and colours to make unique panels.
