LAUNCELOT AND ELAINE
Brief description: A rectangular stained glass window depicting Launcelot and Elaine, designed and made by Andrew Stoddart circa 1910. The design was taken from an art nouveau rug designed by J H Vogeler in 1898. Launcelot can be seen dressed in armour and leaning on a sword. Elaine sits in an ornately carved chair.
Arthurian legends were enormously popular stories adapted and retold in numerous literary and artistic works in the 19th and 20th centuries. This panel shows Lancelot, one of the Knights of the Round Table and Lady Elaine of Astolat, (sometimes known as the Lady of Shalott). Lancelot and Elaine is a story of unrequited love, and Elaine died of heartbreak. Lancelot is shown dressed in armour and leaning on a sword looking upon Elaine, seated in an ornately carved chair with a cushion and lion arm. Her eyes are closed and she is either shown asleep or perhaps following her death from heartbreak. The design for this panel was taken from a German Art Nouveau tapestry designed by Johann Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942) in 1898. It was made by Nottingham-based stained glass artist Andrew Stoddart (1876-1940) for his home. Rectangular window. Chevron archway with crown at summit.
