THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN & BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT
Brief description: Panel of the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. Early example of work by Scottish designer Daniel Cottier. Made by Field and Allan, 1865.
Panel depicting the parable of the Pharisee and the Publican; Blessed are the poor in spirit. Has a canopy background with zigzags, roundels, bricks and foliage archway; triangular pediment, trilobate arch; interior of building with two columns, blue grisaille background; on left a lectern with book inscribed 'Holy Bible'; figure head and upper part covered in dark cloak, hand concealing face; in centre, man 3/4 right, bearded, arm raised, elaborate gown; on right offertory box on pillar. In this panel, an architectural framework in the style of the 14th century surrounds a scene in bright colours, much bolder than a medieval palette. Both the painting and leading are angular and expressive. Daniel Cottier, born in Glasgow, became one of Scotland's most influential designers. He combined a familiarity with the work of the most progressive English stained-glass artists with a taste for both contemporary Continental painting and Scottish tradition, a fusion that resulted in an original and distinctive style.
