THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST

The upper panels of this large three-light window depict scenes from the Ministry of Christ, with the good works of saintly figures below. The Unitarians had long suffered religious persecution, but in the course of the 19th century they emerged as a Nonconformist denomination that attracted some of the wealthiest, most successful and best-educated patrons of the arts. Their churches reflected their enlightened patronage of architecture and the decorative arts. Henry Holiday is best known today as the illustrator of Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem 'The Hunting of the Snark' (1876) but he was one of the leading stained-glass artists of his time. He was a superb figure draughtsman and in 1861 became chief designer for James Powell and Sons. Inspired by his travels in Italy in 1867, his style became increasingly classical. His involvement with the Arts and Crafts movement led him to experiment with making his own glass. He was particularly partial to using slab glass, its uneven surface creating a jewel-like effect.
