Autumn Talk: Powell & Sons' opus sectile: innovation in glass mosaics, 1860s-1890s
4 Oct. 2023 7pm

Price: £6.50 (Friends: £5)
Location: Online
Book
Leading stained-glass makers James Powell & Sons developed a new type of mosaic tiling material in the early 1860s. The vibrantly coloured opaque tiles, known later as opus sectile, were especially popular in church interiors, where they were used for polychrome tiled floors as well as fresco-like mural decoration.
This talk will introduce new research which has revealed more about the early history of opus sectile, and particularly how the material was collected and promoted by the South Kensington Museum. Lily Crowther is Curator of the social history and decorative art collections at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum. She is also reading for a DPhil at Oxford University and the Victoria & Albert Museum; her research focuses on the collections and legacies of the Museum of Construction & Building Materials, which was part of the South Kensington Museum in the 1850s-1880s.
The Zoom link will be shared with ticket holders ahead of the event.
A recording of the lecture will also be shared with ticket holders after the event, ideal for those not able to join us live.

Location: The Stained Glass Museum, South Triforium, Ely Cathedral, Ely, Cambridgeshire CB7 4DL

The art of painting on glass was mastered in the medieval period. Over the following centuries, stained glass artists have used painting techniques to draw with line and light, to create depth and detail, and to control the atmospheric quality of light’s transmission through glass.
In this practical workshop, glass artist Derek Hunt will teach traditional painting techniques. Using vitreous pigment and silver stain on clear glass, students learn to work with a variety of brushes, sticks, quills and sponges to create different effects and shading in both wet and dry matts. Glass work will be fired at intervals throughout the workshop, and ready to take home at the end of the day.

Two Day Glass Stained Glass Workshop with Claire Hart
27 Oct. 2023 10:00-5:00 - 28 Oct. 2023
*** FULLY BOOKED *** Please contact us for waiting list

Price: £250 per person including all materials, equipment and tuition
Location: The Stained Glass Museum & Lighthouse Ely
Book
You begin the first day with your tutor by choosing your own panel design from a selection of patterns, known as ‘cartoons’. Then selecting the coloured glass for your painted areas, you will learn how to cut it to shape and your tutor will demonstrate how to size and score glass to make a break line, and how to grind the edges of the cut glass to achieve a precise shape. The remainder of the day will be spent learning how to apply the enamel paint using different paint techniques. Finished pieces will be kiln fired at intervals throughout the day.
During the second day, you will learn the leading, glazing and soldering techniques that will enable you to assemble your cut glass pieces into a single stained glass panel. Your tutor will demonstrate how to frame your cartoon with wood laths, forming a matrix into which lead calmes and glass can be inserted. You will be taught how to cut lead calmes, and how to open up their central channel to accommodate cut glass. Once you have fixed all of your glass pieces in lead, you will be shown how to use a soldering iron to bond the joints of lead. If you would like to be able to hang your panel, your tutor will help you solder a fixture to the lead. This is the final stage of the workshop, after which you will be able to take your stained glass panel home to enjoy!
