The new series of work by stained glass artist Rachel Mulligan was inspired by the old fortune-telling rhyme Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich man, poor man, beggar man or thief?
During Lockdown Rachel was reminded of two sketches she had made almost 20 years ago of stained glass panels illustrating Tailor and Soldier. She posted the sketches on Instagram and discovered they were made in the 1930s by Charles Paine and Daisy Luther and that panels illustrating Tinker and Sailor also existed. While sketching them Rachel began thinking about how the theme could be retold with a contemporary twist to reflect the tremendous effort of the community during the Covid crisis. From the building of the Nightingale hospitals to the cleaners in care homes, and from Thursday night clapping to supporting those people who suddenly had no income, the eight panels reflect daily life in 2020.
Rachel is inspired by Medieval art and storytelling. Her work is usually very detailed but in these panels she was emulating the pared back, graphic style of the 1930’s originals. During the summer she travelled to Lamberts in Germany so she could select the right mouth-blown glass for the project. The glass has been engraved, painted and stained. Having finished work on the stained glass Rachel then revisited her printmaking past and turned the designs into a series of linocuts, the first she has made in 25 years. Rachel is delighted to be showcasing the new work at the Stained Glass Museum in Ely. It is an inspiring place to visit with so many beautiful and historic panels housed in a stunning location.

Mark Angus: A Dialogue between Poetry and Abstraction
14 Apr. 2021 7pm
Event category: Talk /Tour
Price: £5.00 (Friends: £4.00)
Location: Online
In this illustrated talk Mark Angus will tell some stories from architectural commissions, mainly for churches, over forty years: Working as a stained glass artist has wonderful aspects, one of which involves meeting many wonderful people. Half way through however, this journey took an unexpected turn and he moved to Bavaria. Almost like starting a new career, but with the advantage of living close to the Lamberts Glass factory, and with access to a large acid etching bay which opened new artistic pathways for Mark. In the second part of the talk Mark will discuss his autonomous exhibition panels, and new themes such as the Ark, the “Puer Aeternus” figure, angels, and include a short deviation into “80 Capriccios and the Turbulences of the Self”.
Since 1978 Mark Angus has gained a reputation in Britain and Europe for his expressive stained glass art, and has created windows for churches and cathedrals as well as for other public and private spaces. Important examples include complete schemes for Oundle School, Spinkhill Parish Church, Berkhampstead School, and Perth Baptist Church (all UK), and St. Raymund Parish Church in Breitenberg near Passau (Germany), as well as windows for the cathedrals of Durham and Guildford (UK). More recently, he has completed comprehensive schemes for St. Fintan’s Church, Raheen (Ireland), St. Mary’s Church, Sheffield (UK), and for St. Ursula’s Hospice, Niederalteich (Germany).

Mark Angus studied Architectural Stained Glass at Swansea School of Art during 1976-1978. In the last 20 years his work has been exhibited across Europe. Whilst retaining an interest in church stained glass, Mark Angus has also worked acrylic paintings, and printmaking, especially vitreography, a technique where prints are created from glass sheets, resulting in images of great light and subtlety. Predominant in Mark Angus’ imaginative narratives are the figure, dialogue and interaction, and the human self in space.
This talk is part of a developing series of Artist Talks, hosted by The Stained Glass Museum.

Medieval Treasures of Leicester: Wygston's House Glass
21 Apr. 2021 7pm
Event category: Talk /Tour
Price: £5.00 (Friends: £4.00)
Location: Online
This illustrated talk will focus on some medieval treasures of Leicester known as Wygston's House Glass, 13 panels of which are on display at the Newarke Houses museum in Leicester, normally open on a daily basis. These unique stained glass panels were made in the late 15th century for a house which is now owned by Leicester City Council and leased to a bar and restaurant. There were 27 glass panels originally, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, the medieval catholic liturgy and the seven Acts of Mercy (eg feeding the hungry etc). This is a unique opportunity to find out more about this charming glass and to see those panels that are not normally on display.

She is a member of the Leicester Stained Glass Appreciation Society and a Friend of The Stained Glass Museum.
