ECCE VIRGO (BEHOLD, A VIRGIN) & ANNUNCIATION ANGEL

Brief description: A stained glass panel, depicting an angel holding a scroll announcing that the Virgin Mary will have a child. The angel has a yellow hair, halo and wings, and wears a cream robe and is set against a blue background within a quatrefoil. The rectangular frame around has yellow foliage in red spandrels. Parts of inscription can be seen above and below.

Isaiah's Old Testament prophecy 'Ecce virgo concipiet et pariet filium' (Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son) foretold the Virgin Mary's conception of the Christ Child. Thomas Willement, a pioneering figure in the Victorian stained-glass revival, became Heraldic Artist to George IV and Artist in Stained Glass to Queen Victoria. Although Willement began his career in the Regency enamel-painting period, from the 1840s his work became far more Gothic in feeling, although his strong and bright colours are not entirely true to the medieval models he copied. He was one of the most prolific stained-glass artists of the 19th century and a number of other important designer-makers trained in his studio.
