DOG SEATED ON A CUSHION
Brief description: A portrait of a dog seated on a cushion, signed and dated by the artist, WIlliam Peckitt, 1756.
A small rectangular painted glass panel depicting a dog seated on a red cushion with golden tassles, mounted on on a pedestal. The scene is framed with an ornamental foliate border of paintwork and yellow stain. The panel is entirely executed in enamel paint and yellow stain on clear white glass. This 18th century pet portrait of a lapdog was originally on display at Gisburne Park, an 18th century country house in Lancashire owned by Thomas Lister (1723-61). Lister ordered the panel along with several others from the glass painter William Peckitt (1731-1795) of York in March 1756. Peckitt was the most significant glass painter of this time, known across the country for his skilled enamel painting. He is known to have painted at least three other portraits of lapdogs. Peckitt's signature and date can be seen in the bottom right hand corner of the panel.
