CHRIST PERFORMING A MIRACLE
Brief description: The panel shows Christ with two companions blessing a kneeling woman. The panel is rectangular shaped with the two upper corners rounded off.
The subject is likely taken from an incident in the life of Christ as documented in the Gospel of Matthew 15:21-28. Jesus was approached by a distraught woman who asked him to heal her daughter, who was posessed by a demon. His disciples showed little sympathy and urged Jesus to send her away. But Jesus healed her child and restored her faith. The inclusion of the dog is likely a reference to her response 'Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table'. The design for this panel suggests it was produced in the Netherlands, in the 16th or 17th century. Although the artist has not been identifed the scene was popular with artists like Jan Saenredam, Adriaen Collaert and Philips Galle. The scene is painted onto a single pane of clear (white) glass with extensive use of silver stain and painted fret work.
