WELCOME PANEL

Brief description: This 17th century panel is probably a Swiss Welcome Panel. A rider on horseback is being greeted by a woman holding a cup and jug - suggesting a warm welcome.

According to the historian J.T. Brighton this panel is possibly Swiss, dating from the early 17th century. The panel shows a lady standing behind a horseman. The horseman wears a wide-brimmed black hat and is dressed in black clothes with a white ruff. He holds a riding crop in his left hand and the horse reins in his right hand. The woman stands on the right behind the horse; she holds a cup and jug and is looking at the horseman as if to greet him. A castle is in the background on the left. It is probably a Welcome panel. This panel was one of several panels installed in a window at Gisburne Park, an 18th century country house in Lancashire owned by Thomas Lister (1723-61).
