PAUL PREACHING AT ATHENS
Brief description: Cartoon depicting Paul preaching at Athens, by Henry Holiday
A cartoon is a working drawing which is the same scale as the final stained glass panel. This cartoon, designed by Henry Holiday for Powell & Sons, shows Paul preaching at Athens. Paul is shown standing on a plinth whilst a crowd look on thoughtfully. Fluted columns are suggestive of the Greek architecture of Athens. The lead lines are indicated by thick black lines. Parts of the drawing are coloured with a yellow wash and these parts indicate which pieces of glass should be painted with silver stain. Parts of garments are also drawn with detailed patterning to indicate to the glass painter how the glass should be painted. Other markings indicate painted treatment and colour of the glas to be used.
