THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Brief description: Cartoon depicting The Descent of the Holy Spirit, by Henry Holiday
Cartoon showing the Descent of the Holy Spirit, or Pentecost. The cartoon was drawn by Henry Holiday for Powell & Sons. A dove is shown descending upon a group of seven disciples and the Virgin Mary. The group are shown seated in a circle, kneeling with their hands clasped in prayer. A flame sits on top of each of their halos to symbolise the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon them. At the centre of the composition is the Virgin Mary. She is the only figure whose face we can see in its entireity, this emphasis may suggest the cartoon was drawn for a Catholic church.
