THE DEPOSITION
Brief description: Cartoon depicting the lowering of Christ from the Cross by Henry Holiday, for St Mary Magdalene Church, Latimer
This cartoon depicts the Descent from the Cross. This is the moment that Christ's body is lowered from the cross after death. One of the disciples is on a ladder while the other takes the weight of Christ's limp body from the other side. Mary Magdalene is shown holding the grief-stricken Virgin Mary, Christ's mother, who appears to have fainted. This cartoon was drawn by Henry Holiday for Powell & Sons and several areas have been drawn in detail to give instruction to the glass painters on how to paint the glass, for instance the foliage in the bottom right, the tree trunks that form the cross, and the drapery lines and hair.
