2016 Study Weekend: Essex
Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 April 2016
This year’s study weekend will take place in Essex, where we will be based in the historic town of Colchester. Over the weekend we will visit a variety of sites and see a range of glass from the medieval to the modern period. Highlights include rare 12th and 13th French century glass at Rivenhall, unique 14th century fragments at Sheering, a 15th century Tree of Jesse at Margaretting, imported 16th/17th century glass from France from the Neave Collection at Noak Hill and 18th century glass at Leigh-on-Sea.
For those interested in the work of 19th and 20th century stained glass artists and studios, we will visit the early Burne-Jones windows for Powell & Sons at Waltham Abbey, and see windows by Percy Bacon, Townshend and Howson, and A. K. Nicholson at Prittlewell, as well as more recent works by John Hayward at Sheering and Patrick Reyntiens at Romford. The variety of 19th and 20th century glass to be found in Colchester churches will be particularly interesting to those who don’t know the area, and we also hope to visit the splendid ‘Art-Nouveau cathedral’ at Great Warley, which although the original glass is destroyed, is well-known for its Art Nouveau fittings and today includes windows by Powells and Lawrence Lee.
